Lionel Machris is a German photographer and visual artist based in Hamburg whose career began in international fashion and editorial photography. After training as a photographer, he also attended painting and graphic-art courses at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts. In 1989 he moved to Paris, where he assisted international fashion and cosmetics photographers, and in 1992 continued his career in Milan. He later worked for magazines including Vogue, Elle Germany, and Madame Germany and for clients such as Calvin Klein, Boss, Garnier, Unilever, and Beiersdorf.
Machris’s later fine-art practice transforms the precision and staging of professional photography into materially charged images. A distinctive feature is his use of photographic works on 24-carat gold leaf, where the reflective surface shifts with light and the viewer’s position. In his art, photography, painting, and precious material combine to create images that move between physical presence and symbolic or metaphysical suggestion. His work increasingly emphasizes transformation, luminosity, and the tension between image and object.
His international exhibition history includes the Paris Photo Biennale, the Barcelona Biennale, and presentations in London, Rome, Venice, Zurich, Palma de Mallorca, Los Angeles, New York, Miami, and Beijing. In 2023-2024 his work was shown at Hong Art Museum in Chongqing and at the Rothko Museum. He also participated in the 2025 Hamburg-Shanghai anniversary exhibition ‘From Huangpu River to Elbe River’ and participated in ‘Seelenlandschaften’ in Greiz in 2026.
