Helmut Spanner, born in Augsburg in 1951, is a German artist, author, illustrator, composer, and musician. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and co-founded the “Gruppe Bilderbuch,” which examined and developed children’s books from artistic, psychological, and educational perspectives. Since publishing his first board book in the 1970s, he has become one of Germany’s best-known creators of books for very young children. His works are characterized by close observation and a form of realism intended to make objects immediately recognizable to children. His books have sold more than thirteen million copies internationally.

In addition to receiving the “Critici in erba” and “Leander” awards, as well as several online prizes, he was awarded the “Goldener Pinsel” in 2022 in recognition of his lifetime achievement as a picture-book author.

Spanner’s lifelong engagement with the relationship between image, recognition, language, and learning also shapes his current visual art. In his more recent conceptual works, known as “Picture-Talks,” writing itself becomes image. Dense handwritten layers and repetitive textual structures transform language into rhythm, pattern, and meditative abstraction. Meaning emerges through accumulation and the physical act of writing as much as through reading. His parallel career as a musician adds another dimension by bringing together repetition, tempo, and visual rhythm.

His exhibitions include “Im Reich der Phantasie” in Mindelheim and a retrospective presentation in Buchloe. In 2026, Pashmin Art Gallery Hamburg presented his Picture-Talks in the international group exhibition “The Constant Becoming.” That same year, his Picture-Talks were also shown in a museum context as part of the exhibition “Seelenlandschaften” at the Museums of the Castle and Residence City of Greiz.
