Elmar Hempel (born 1965, Ulm) grew up in an artistic environment, influenced by his father, the well-known South German artist Frank Hempel. He came into contact with various painting techniques such as watercolor, lithography, and linocut at an early age and developed a deep passion for art.
After training as a decorator, Hempel gained a wide range of professional experience as a wallpaperer, painter, welder, floor layer, and shop fitter, which broadened his view of materials, structure, and design. Personal challenges, including a long-term addiction, led him to art therapy at the UPD Waldau, where he was able to further develop his work and participate in exhibitions.
Elmar Hempel works mainly in the abstract, strongly influenced by Art Brut, with an intense expression of emotions, inner conflicts, and personal experiences. His works are characterized by expressive areas of color, dynamic compositions, and a powerful combination of materiality and form. Through his painting, he creates spaces for reflection in which viewers can trace the emotional depth of his life story.
Today, Hempel devotes himself entirely to art. For him, painting is not only a creative process, but also a healing practice and an expression of self-reflection. His works aim to touch viewers visually, engage them emotionally, and allow them to experience the transformative power of art.
