Eli Schläppi is a Swiss artist working in painting and drawing, born and raised near Basel and based in Hamburg since 2020. She studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Basel and trained in graphic design before working for many years as a naturopathic practitioner, licensed by the Swiss cantonal authority, in her own practice in Baselland, Switzerland. She later returned intensively to drawing and painting through programs in Hamburg, Berlin, and the Pentiment International Summer Academy at HAW Hamburg.
Her abstract work is closely tied to lived experience, bodily perception, and the natural world. Years of engagement with Chinese medicine, Daoist thought, and East Asian calligraphic traditions inform her understanding of gesture, flow, balance, and transformation. Rivers, volcanic landscapes, northern skies, light, and ecological systems recur as sources of inspiration. Works such as “Not green but blue river”, inspired by Switzerland’s Aare River, “Hamburg’s Sky-Elbe-Beach”, and “Lanzarote” translate natural forces into sweeping lines and layered fields of color. Her practice combines Western abstraction with Eastern philosophical thought while emphasizing direct, physical engagement with materials.
Schläppi’s exhibition history includes “Miniaturtextilkunst 83” in Hanover and the Netherlands Textilmuseum in Tilburg in 1984. Recent presentations include “IFUPA” at Photo.Kunst.Raum in Hamburg in 2023, “Umkehr der Erinnerungen” at Photo.Kunst.Raum in Hamburg in 2023, a solo exhibition at Galerie Wasser in Hamburg in 2025, the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris in 2025, and “International Contemporary Echoes” at Another Art Museum in Guangzhou, China, in 2026. Her work was also presented in “Seelenlandschaften” at the Schlossmuseen Greiz in 2026.
Kunst.
