Helmut Spanner, born in Augsburg in 1951, is a German artist, author, illustrator, composer, and musician. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich and co-founded the “Gruppe Bilderbuch,” which explored and developed children’s books from artistic, psychological, and educational perspectives. Since the 1970s, he has become one of Germany’s best-known creators of picture books for young children. His books have sold more than thirteen million copies worldwide. Among several distinctions, he received the “Goldener Pinsel” award for his lifetime achievement in 2022.

Spanner’s lifelong engagement with the relationship between image, perception, language, and learning also shapes his current artistic practice. In his conceptual works known as “Picture-Talks,” writing itself becomes image. Dense handwritten layers and repeated textual structures transform language into rhythm, pattern, and meditative abstraction. Meaning emerges through both reading and the accumulation and physical act of writing. His parallel career as a musician adds a distinctive sense of repetition, tempo, and visual rhythm.

His exhibitions include “Im Reich der Phantasie” in Mindelheim and a retrospective presentation in Buchloe. In 2026, the Pashmin Art Gallery Hamburg presented his “Picture-Talks” in the international group exhibition “The Constant Becoming.” His participation in “Seelenlandschaften” in Greiz now brings these works into a museum context.
