Carlos

Escobar

(Switzerland)

Carlos Escobar was born in 1984 in Mexico City and grew up in the nearby village of Tlatecahucan. From an early age, he discovered his passion for visual art while working in his family’s stationery shop. His creative talents led him to the Mexican film industry, where he designed and implemented special effects for film and commercial productions in Mexico City for five years. At the age of 23, he enrolled at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) to study industrial design, while also pursuing oil painting and street art in his spare time. After one semester at UNAM, he moved to Switzerland and began studying Art Education at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). Today, Carlos works as an independent artist in Switzerland, focusing on visual arts and tattoo art.

Carlos Escobar’s artistic practice employs oil painting and collage to create surrealistic works that integrate elements of tribal art, electronic components, and diverse painting techniques. His art offers a vibrant journey into the inner worlds of his figures, often portraying hybrids of humans and animals. By reassembling symbols and impressions from urban everyday life, he explores complex themes related to identity, mortality, perception, spirituality, and power. His works have been exhibited in galleries and tattoo conventions across Bern, Hamburg, London, Nottingham, and Berlin.

For Carlos, art serves as a medium to convey subtle perceptions, emotions, and impressions that are often difficult to express in words. He sees art as a magnifier or filter—much like in music—that reveals what is typically sensed or guessed. It is a direct connection to people’s inner selves and, naturally, to his own. He values the power of artistic exchange among creators from diverse cultural backgrounds, where the internal world transforms into external expression. Although the form of expression remains consistent, the contextual framework evolves, allowing art to function as a universal language.
