Horst

Ludwig

(Germany)

Horst Ludwig is a highly experienced artist, specializing in painting, with a lifelong passion for horses, especially Arabian thoroughbreds. Born on November 16, 1946, in Erfurt – Schwerborn, Germany, he grew up surrounded by animals, which have always been loyal companions in his life. As a young man, he spent much of his time in the old churches and cathedrals of the former GDR, where he often assisted painters and art restorers. It was in the community of freelance painters that he learned various painting techniques, and his talent was recognized and nurtured early on. This period deeply influenced his passion for painting.

Horst Ludwig is a proud father of two daughters. After 57 happy years of marriage, he lost his beloved wife in February 2023. Despite this loss, the shared love for Arabian horses and their breeding continues to shape daily life on the family estate near Stralsund on the island of Rügen, where he lives and works as a free spirit and artist. His studio, affectionately named “Kleckshäuschen,” is called “al Kuhl,” derived from the Arabic word “al-kuhl,” symbolizing the beauty, elegance, grace of Arabian horses, as well as the trust and deep connection between humans and animals.

Ludwig’s work passionately reflects his deep connection to horses and life in all its facets.

Artistic Approach – “The Dynamics of Horse, Human, and Landscape”

In his passionate paintings, Horst Ludwig merges the powerful elegance of Arabian horses, the deep emotions of human portraits, and the vast beauty of landscapes in a harmonious interplay of color, form, and movement. Using a variety of techniques, ranging from impressionistic color plays to expressive brushstrokes, Ludwig creates a world where the boundaries between reality and imagination are fluid.

The Arabian horses, symbols of grace, strength, and freedom, are portrayed in his works not merely as animals, but as living beings radiating deep emotional resonance. Alongside the horses, humans occupy a central role in his paintings, portrayed in all their complexity and depth. Ludwig captures moments of life: in stillness and contemplation, in dynamism and passion. He employs various techniques to reveal the depth and nuances of human emotions.

The landscapes framing his works are more than mere backdrops; they are breathing, living elements that support the scenes and lend them a unique atmosphere. Whether vast deserts, gentle hills, or dense forests, each landscape is imbued with a mood that intensifies the narrative and transports the viewer to another world.

Ludwig’s versatility in applying techniques allows him to capture the energy and emotion of every subject. He experiments with bold colors, different textures, and varying perspectives to create an intense visual experience that appeals to both the eyes and the heart. His art is a reflection of his passion and dedication, inviting the viewer to see the world through the eyes of an artist who captures not only the visible, but also the invisible, the emotional, and the spiritual – a world that speaks of the beauty of Arabian horses, the depth of the human spirit, and the power of nature.
